Module 1: Introduction to Motorcycle Licensing

Updated: 4 days ago

Getting your motorcycle licence is a big step toward freedom and opportunity. In South Africa, thousands of people use motorbikes every day, from delivery riders and couriers to students and commuters. Whether you’re working toward a delivery job or just want independence on the road, this module will guide you through everything you need to know before you start.

Goal of this module: By the end, you’ll understand which licence you need, how to book your learner’s test, and what to expect on test day.

1. Overview of Code A and A1

South Africa has two types of motorcycle licences. They’re both part of the K53 system, but they apply to different bike sizes.

Licence Type

Engine Size

Minimum Age

Typical Use

Code A1

Up to 125cc

16 years

Scooters and small delivery bikes

Code A

Over 125cc

17 years

Bigger motorcycles and courier bikes

Tip: If you’re planning to work for a delivery company, Code A1 is enough, most delivery scooters are under 125cc.

2. Who Can Apply

You can apply for your learner’s licence if:

  • You meet the minimum age for your code (16 or 17)

  • You have a valid South African ID or passport

  • You can understand English, since test questions are written in English

  • You are mentally and physically fit to control a motorcycle safely

Good to know: You don’t need to own a motorcycle yet. You just need to be ready to start learning — many learners rent bikes or use a driving school for practice later.

3. Required Documents and Photo Rules

When you book or arrive for your test, take the following:

  • Your ID book or smart ID card

  • Two ID photos (colour, clear face, light background)

  • Proof of address — like a bank statement, bill, or letter with your name and address

  • Application fee (usually R90–R120, depends on testing centre)

Important tips:

  • Photos must be recent (not older than 6 months)

  • No hats, sunglasses, or masks If you live with someone else, you can use an affidavit confirming your address.

4. Step-by-Step Booking Guide (Using eNatis)

You can book your learner’s test online or in person.

Option 1: Online Booking 1. Go to www.online.natis.gov.za

2. Click 'Book Now for Learner’s Licence Test'

3. Choose your province and nearest testing centre

4. Select a date and time that works for you

5. Fill in your details (ID number, name, phone number, and test code)

6. Confirm your booking and print or screenshot your confirmation

Option 2: Book in Person

1. Visit your nearest Driving Licence Testing Centre (DLTC)

2. Take all your documents and photos

3. Fill in the LL1 application form provided there

4. Pay your fee and choose a test date

Tip: Some busy centres are fully booked for weeks, so booking early helps you secure a spot.

5. What to Expect on Test Day

  1. When your test day arrives:

  2. Bring your ID, booking slip, and photos

  3. Arrive at least 30 minutes early

  4. You’ll write the test on a computer or sometimes on paper (depending on the centre)

  5. The test is multiple choice, and you’ll need to answer questions from multiple sections

If you pass, you’ll get your learner’s licence the same day, valid for 24 months.
